The Navigator, also known as the Helmsman or colloquially as the Nav, is the primary piloting officer of the ship. They are tasked with the manipulation of the ship's controls in order to plot courses or otherwise move the ship to an intended destination.

As a bridge officer, the Navigator reports directly to the Captain.

Piloting the Ship

A ship such as the Emissary usually is staffed at peak capacity with two Navigators: they take place of the frontal console at the Bridge and are seated directly in front of the Captain.

A Navigator's job is to man the ship's navigational consoles -- this can mean anything from astrogation to cartography to the physical maneuvering of the ship. Navigators are trained in how to operate the ship's thrusters, reaction control system (RCS), and gyroscopic stabilizers to adjust the ship's direction.

Navigators also know how to perform the navigational side of operating the ship's warp drive, often being tasked by the Captain or the officer of the deck to engage the drive and bring the ship in and out of warp.

As it is an entry-level position into the fleet, all non-departmental Line Officers are trained in navigational duties and can pilot the ship if needed.
